Briefing

Briefing with Helen: During a lecture for another module, towards the end of the first semester, my lecturer Helen asked if I could stay behind a few minuets to discuss a potential brief she thought I might be interested in, that it would suit me very well.  The Students Union at the university wanted some limited edition sweatshirts, zoody/hoody, onesies type products created in a tattoo style illustration on the back. Tattoo styles and illustration design in this genre  is my absolute favourite,  and I am actually doing a tattoo shop identity and branding as my main project/disseration as I have always loved creating tattoo designs for friends and family, and have alway been surrounded by the detailed, dark, intricate designs and imagery so love to be a part of this when I can.  The main point to this brief is to feature the University's Campus Cat, "Toby", visualising and interpreting him in a line drawing through a tattoo style that...

Research and Ideas

Initial Research: For my initial research I immediately jumped on to Pinterest, searching reference imagery of cats/portraits and also cats in tattoo styles or styles that prompted other ideas. This was extremely helpful as this then gave me starting points that I could then develop in to my own versions/sketches and then further amend with the client also to custom designs. I found various art styles like darker and slightly scarier, or cheeky and fun, or more realistic which gave me many directions/routes to portray to the client to see which way they wanted the designs to go, how they wanted the look and feel of these products to be. Here are some of the images I had found to kick start ideas generation.... https://www.pinterest.co.uk/pin/366832332146727856/ https://www.pinterest.co.uk/pin/366832332146668220/ https://www.pinterest.co.uk/pin/366832332146627692/ https://www.pinterest.co.uk/pin/366832332146627690/ https://www.pinterest.co.uk/pin/433260426641445963/ htt...

Refined Ideas and Conclusion

User testing and feedback "I think it's safe to say the client was happy! The pic is attached. It's currently printed at a width of 250mm if you'd like to put it up to 100% so you can see exactly how big the detail will be. And we need a University of Worcester down the sleeve. The maximum length this can be is 280mm. It could be done in 2 presses if that really isn't big enough, but I'm trying to keep workload to a minimum and it's already quite complicated." So finally I amended to this spec, adjusting the smaller details so they could but cut/weeded more efficiently and also created the typography for the length of the sleeve to be done in 2 presses. These final designs were then sent off and I have just been waiting for the next step or further feedback from the client. Conclusion I thoroughly enjoyed this brief, being the art style and theme it was. My biggest enthusiasm in design is being able to to enhance the work with a quirk or...
